Traveling with Credit Cards

The season of summer vacations is fast approaching. So, it may be the right time for you to plan your vacation trip, plus learn some essential financial rules of the road. Traveling brings pleasure and joy, new experiences and all sorts of adventures. However, the last adventure a traveler wants to experience is the one dealing with a lost or stolen purse.

No matter where your trip takes you, to your friends' at the nearby state or to faraway lands, you should take certain precautions in order to avoid financial troubles when traveling.

As the saying goes, it's never the same twice. One may get into troubles without even leaving neighborhoods. However, no traveler wants to become the victim of a pickpocket. And unfortunately there's no guarantee that your cash or credit cards will be safe and secure at the place you're going to visit.

First off, experts recommend limiting the things you carry. There's no need to take a bunch of credit cards with you. Generally, two plastics are quite enough. One card should be used regularly, while the other one will serve as a backup.

If you plan an overseas trip, it would be wise to notify your credit company so that your creditor doesn't put a hold on your account when seeing charges from the unfamiliar place. Besides, don't forget to check your credit limits to avoid exceeding them when traveling.

The choice of the card is also of great importance. When using credit cards on trips, you will face foreign exchange fees. Choose the card that has the lowest fee, or even none. Such plastics do exist, so try to find the one because it will save you a pretty penny.

If you travel abroad, it is a good idea to buy the equivalent of about $100 in the currency of that country you are going to visit. It may be used for tipping or for paying taxi fares and other expenditures. This is really helpful and convenient.

The way you handle your plastics or cash can also affect your financial security. Use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings no matter whether you're at home or abroad. Experts advise to choose ATMs inside banks or hotels. Creepy corners are definitely not the best place to withdraw cash.

Traveling with your dear one, friends, or family, it's also a good idea to split credit cards or cash. That way, if one card is lost or stolen, there's a backup in case of emergency that can be used while you settle the problems with your lost card.

When staying at hotel, by all means it would be great to keep your cards and money in a safe. However, if you've got no access to the safe, it's recommended to keep all the necessary documents and money on the person. Once you're not sure the place is safe, do not live credit cards, passport, or airline tickets at that place.

It is also advised to leave behind anything you don't want to lose, like your Social Security card, or driver's license if you don't plan to drive, jewelry, and various membership cards. Speaking of travel documents, you'd better make photocopies of them. There's no need to list your credit card numbers, you'd better list the phone numbers to contact your creditor in case of emergency.
